No Desktop Scanner? Use This Android Mobile Document Scanner For Personal And Work

There are times when someone sends you a document and you need to print it, sign it, and return it. Many printers have scanner capabilities, but they can be slow or not so easy to use. Or, you are simply out of the office and need to get a document back to someone. 
With this mobile scanning app, you can simply snap a photo, and instead of saving as a JPG, save and send it as a PDF. That is not as easy to do from your standard mobile phone camera. MDScan, or Mobile Doc Scanner for Android, is one of the best I have found. There is a free, Lite version and a one-time $4.99 paid version. After using the Lite version for a few weeks, I upgraded to the paid version and love it. Lots of other scanning apps charge a much higher fee, often $5 per month. I am not scanning that often to make it worth it.

The best part: After you snap a photo of your document, you can choose the edit function (a pencil icon in their app) and it gives you the option to “Apply Signature” (see image above) and opens a clear white signature box where you write your name with your finger. It then inserts that and you can size it and move it to exactly the right position in the document. Send it as a PDF or JPG. 
Years ago, I paid for the Premium Edition of Evernote for exactly this reason: I wanted a good mobile scanning solution that let me scan receipts or documents that I have to sign and return as PDFs. MDScan gave me a more affordable and easy way to do that. It doesn't do everything that Evernote does, of course, but it scans really well and the paid version also has optical character recognition or OCR. That comes in handy if you scan a page of a book, for example, and export all the text to another program. 
MDScan lets me quickly scan receipts, coupons, articles, photos, and basically anything I can photograph. If it is a document, you can easily adjust the scan with these nifty border control options (or set it to snap to size automatically). 
With a few extra clicks, you can set it to store automatically to whatever cloud storage service you use, such as Google Drive, or Dropbox. I sometimes decide to do some of my writing longhand (I know, what an anomaly), but I want them in my journal file, so I use MDScan’s “Batch Mode” that lets me scan multiple pages quickly. They also have a “Spy Mode” that lets you scan (take a photo) as quickly as you want and it will process those images later. 
It is possible to work with photos or documents that you already have on your phone (or Google Drive) and open them up and modify or edit as needed and re-save with modifications via the app. Again, it has a powerful OCR feature, but I found it does not do well with handwritten text, at least my handwriting.

I have found it particularly helpful during this stay at home period where I sometimes have to modify a document for my son in his new online schooling program.
